Moving to the UK's capital is daunting enough without even thinking about where to live! So, here are some handy tips...
London has become known as the city of renters. The most recent stats show Central West London has the highest percentage of people renting at 83%, compared to the South East at - a still high - 66%. And more and more of us want to live in London, but where?
There’s just so much choice. Perhaps you like greenery? So, Richmond and its' deer studded park is a perfect match for you. Or maybe you fancy something busier like the bustling restaurant-lined Charlotte Street.
Loving an area is one thing, but there are also more practical things to think about when it comes to the location of your new home. Here are a few...
Is it close to your job? Or is it big enough to work from?
Commuting sucks! So, if you need to go into an office it’s a good idea to live near it to avoid the rush hour commute. Being squashed against a tube door or wobbling when the bus turns a corner is not fun for anyone.
On the other hand, if you’re working from home it’s important that you have a space to work. This means - if possible - having a space other than your bedroom to work. You might be lucky enough to have the budget for a second bedroom that can be turned into a study. If not, having a living room with space for a desk, rather than working from the dining room table, will make switching off a lot easier.
Make sure friends are nearby
If you know people in the city already, it’s good to find a home nearby. This lets you pop in on them - and them visit you - without pre-planning or pre-booking. This is especially important if you’re moving to the city or country for the first time. Being around a support network will help you settle in much faster.
Green spaces are important
London is a green city with parks dotted all across the capital, there's Regents Park, Battersea Park, Victoria Park and the list goes on...so it shouldn’t be hard finding a place that is close to a green spot. This is even more vital if you’re planning on living in a flat or somewhere without a garden or balcony. We all know the significance of nature plays in our wellbeing, so being close to trees, greenery and plants should be on your list.
Be near the tube
Minus rush hour, London Transport’s tube system is excellent. Getting from A to B is quick and easy. Travelling from North to South London is just a trip on the Northern Line! If you can’t find somewhere walking distance from a tube stop make sure the bus links are great.
Think about your neighbours
Who will you be living next to? Checking out your neighbours before putting down a deposit is a good idea. You don’t want to be woken up to a house party on a Monday or a dog barking all day.
